• Open Painter
• Choose Mac: Menu > Corel Painter 12 > Preferences
• Choose Win: Menu > Edit > Preferences
• Choose Brush Tracking
• Do a few practice strokes at average pressure and average speed

• Hold down the shift key when launching.

Color Theory

How we see color

Four kinds of light-sensitive receptors are found in the retina

Fun fact: Turtles have more then three types of cones (5, in fact) and can see colors we cannot!

The Color wheel

The basic color wheel

The primary colors: The three colors which can't be derived from other colors.
Red, yellow and blue.

Secondary: What you get when you mix the primaries.
Orange, green and purple

Tertiary: Colors between the primary and secondary colors.
Red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-green, yellow-green, yellow orange

Complimentary: Opposite colors on the color wheel.
Red:green, red-purple:yellow-green, purple:yellow, blue-purple:yellow-orange, blue:orange, blue-green:red-orange

Analogous: Adjacent colors on the color wheel.
Red-orange:red:red-purple, red-purple:purple:blue-purple, etc.

Quadratic: Colors that are evenly divided between 4 points on the wheel (in a square).
Orange-orange-red, purple-purple-red, blue-blue-green, and yellow-yellow-green for one example.

HSV (Hue, Saturation, Value or Brightness (HSB))

So far, we've been talking about Hue, or the color of a color (red, blue, green, etc).

Colors have two other properties that make up what we can see: Saturation and Value (sometimes called Brightness)

Hue on the vertical axis

Saturation on the horizontal axis

Value/Brightness on the horizontal axis

Value/Brightness AKA Tints and Shades

The Painter Color Mixer

Try This:

1. 
   Open the Mixer Pad
2. 
   Clear the Mixer Pad from the pop-up menu in the upper right
3. 
   Put a dab of color on the top center portion of the pad with the brush tool
4. 
   Add a dab of black and of white to either side of the color dab.
5. 
   Use palette knife icon to the color with black and white. Mix color from the color to black and mix white to the color.
6. 
   Open Color Set window. Go to the menu in the lower left of the window. Scroll to "New Color Set from Mixer Pad".
7. 
   Sort by LHS (Luminance (value), Hue, Saturation).
8. 
   Save color set. Name by colors (like "Lotsa Red Shades and Tints"). Save to your folder or device.

Alternatively, use the eyedropper in the Color Mixer window and select a limited number of colors from dark to light, like around 10.

• 
1. Select the eyedropper tool in the Mixer Window.
2. Pick a color
3. Click on the "Add Color To Colorset" button in the Color Set window
4. Repeat until you have a nice set of shades and tints
5. Save it with a name like "10 Red Shades and Tints"

Add the shades and tints to the default color set

1. In the Color Set window, use the menu in the lower left to "Open Color Set."
2. Navigate to the application folder's "Color Sets" folder and load "Assorted Colors" from the list of files.
3. Choose "Append Color Set" from the Color Set window menu
4. Navigate to the file you save before and click "Open"

Tip: work light to dark to build up value

• Pastels, charcoal, chalks, pencils, conte, etc. Use several.
• Use blender, eraser
• opacity slider and gray colors to control value

Seven Values:

1. Highlight
2. Light Value (tone)
3. Middle Tone
4. Dark Tone (shadow)
5. Core Shadow
6. Reflected Light
7. Cast Shadow

Pens

Try all different types: reed, croquil, thick/thin, calligraphic, sumi-e, etc.

• Use hatching and cross hatching to build up value
• Use opacity and white color to control value
